Robots, Racers, and Recycled Art 🤖 The Magical Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race

Get ready people! On September 16th, the City of Lowell will host the 8th annual “Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race”.

An Ode to Engineering, Art, and All-Out Fun

When you think of Lowell, kinetic sculptures might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But maybe they should be. The Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race (LKSR) has been shaking up the city’s streets, mud pits, and even the Merrimack River every year since its inaugural event in 2016. In a nutshell, this one-of-a-kind race is where art and engineering collide in the most whimsical way possible.

The Wacky and Wonderful World of LKSR

What Even Is a Kinetic Sculpture Race?

Let's get the basics out of the way first: What exactly is a kinetic sculpture race? Imagine a float parade but with human-powered, all-terrain sculptures that can go anywhere—streets, water, mud, and sand. Created from both new and recycled materials, these aren't your average sculptures. Many have moving parts like blinking eyes, opening mouths, or heads that move side to side. You can expect to see teams composed of pilots, pit crews, and support staff, all aiming to conquer the racecourse with their innovative machines.

The Heart of the Race: STEAM & Community

The LKSR is more than just a spectacle. It's an annual STEAM event promoting science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. This initiative encourages creativity, disruptive innovation, and physical activity in the community. Open to all ages, the race also collaborates with local schools, after-school programs, artists, engineers, and cycling enthusiasts. If you've got a knack for invention or a flair for the dramatic, this is the place for you.

Mark Your Calendars: Always The 3rd Saturday of September

This year, just like clockwork, the race will be held on the third Saturday of September.

The One Rule to Rule Them All: HAVE FUN!

Oh, and let's not forget about the most important rule of the event: YOU MUST HAVE FUN! Really, it's an official rule. You can read all the rules, but that's the golden one.

Join the Race or Be a Spectator, Just Don't Miss It

Whether you're an art lover, a tech enthusiast, or someone who enjoys a good laugh, there’s something for everyone at the Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race. I'll see you there!
